Tai Chi Blossoms In April

No matter your business, industry, hobby, life focus, philanthropic effort or interest, there is more than likely a specific month or day set aside to celebrate it. April has no shortage of these celebrations and you may take part in one or several of these observances.

In looking over the April calendar, it is exciting to note just how many of these special “days” or “months” could tie in directly to the practices of Tai Chi and Qigong and also, to being an active member of the Healer Within Foundation community. Some of these celebrations may include…

National Community Service Month - Starting a Community Practice Group is a wonderful way to provide service to your community! Ask HWF how!
National Mental Health Month - The practices of Tai Chi and Qigong have been found to be beneficial in treating and preventing psychiatric disorders. Resources which examine this evidence can be found HERE.
National Volunteer Month - Consider volunteering your time with a HWF work team. We could use your help with grant writing, donor care and fundraising strategies. Contact HWF if you can help out!
Stress Awareness Month - An interesting research article with focus on using Tai Chi for stress management can be found HERE.
Women's Health Care Month - A 2015 article highlighting the benefits of Tai Chi for women featured in Harvard Women's Health Watch can be found HERE.
World Health Day is April 8 - We’re training thousands to improve the health of millions and we’re expanding our international reach each year!

Perhaps our favorite observance in April comes on the 28th of the month on World Tai Chi and Qigong Day. We've heard from several members of our community who are busy organizing events to celebrate. We hope you will, too! Find out more at WorldTaiChiDay.org and please share your World Tai Chi Day event stories and photos with us at our Facebook page.

Whatever you choose to celebrate this month, we celebrate YOU for helping us spread the word about self-healing, Tai Chi, Qigong and awakening the Healer Within!

Be well,
Your friends at the Healer Within Foundation

Integrative Healthcare Update

Integrative Health & Wellness Caucus Focuses on Putting Health Back in Healthcare

As a follow-up for the call to action request from the Integrative Health Policy Consortium (IHPC) we wrote about in last months newsletter, we wish to share the update we received from the IHPC on the launch of the Integrative Health and Wellness Caucus. The Caucus held their inaugural meeting on March 15, 2018 in Washington, DC. The bipartisan effort cites prevention and integrative health solutions to combat the opioid crisis and is the start of informing and educating Congress, policy-makers and agencies about the improved outcomes and cost-saving possible when healthcare is oriented to prevention, wellness and well-being.

Healing Story Spotlight: Jonathan Henderson

This month it is our pleasure to share the healing story of Jonathan Henderson. Johnathan recently completed Tai Chi Easy™ Practice Leader training in Roslyn, New York and his self-care journey inspired us all! We asked if he would be willing to share some of his story, and we are so glad he agreed...

"My Healer Within story starts at the funeral for a retired FDNY Firefighter who was killed by 9/11 related Cancer in 2012.  Like many FDNY, he responded to the site on that day and days after, worked the 30-day detail recovering bodies, he had sinus, lungs, stomach and anger problems. Soon after he retired he had a blood test and something didn’t look right, six months later I was at his funeral.

I had a similar work experience and was taking many of the same medicines. Cervical fusion for herniated discs and 9/11 related sinus surgery (removed 30 polyps) would force my early retirement in January, 2013. I had gained significant weight after each surgery and was over 300 pounds, constantly in pain, depressed, angry and eating convenient “food”. The doctors kept giving me more medicines but none of my problems were being resolved, I saw the grim fate of the path I was on. The line, “Get busy living or get busy dying”, echoed in my mind as a fire burned in my gut telling me to get out of New York. My pension would pay me for the rest of my life, my job now is figure out how to stay alive.

An Alternative To Facebook?

Recently, some people have shared they have begun to seek alternatives to Facebook and other mainstream social media platforms. If this describes you, for whatever reason, we would love your help! Very soon we will begin testing our private social community features through our current website/organizational management system.

With these social community features in place and functioning, those in the HWF community will have nearly all the benefits of Facebook, privately and securely, without ads, strangers or information tracking. You can share information, pictures and documents, join or create social "circles" and network with others in the Healer Within Community.

If you would like to help us test this great set of features, please contact Christie Ward for more information. Thank you!
