Strong Hearts

“When the heart is at ease, the body is healthy.” - Chinese Proverb

February 1, 2022 marked the celebration of the Lunar (Chinese) New Year. This year is known as a year of the Water Tiger, predicted to bring an authoritative and confident energy to all. We know Tigers to be tenacious, competitive, and strong with the potential to also be aggressive creatures. Additionally, the Water Tiger is viewed as energetic with an open mind and strong moral compass. Keeping these traits in mind, we can be hopeful this is a year which will encourage each of us to take charge of our lives (and our health), and to grow into the self-assured beings we wish to become.

The second month of the calendar year also finds us celebrating love. Images of hearts appear everywhere and while romantic love may be on the minds of many, it can also remind us of the importance of taking care of our physical hearts, too.

There has been much research on the heart (and overall health) benefits of Qigong, Tai Chi and other body/mind/spirit practices. A recent article by Michelle Fletcher, B.A. of the Pacific College of Health and Science cites several encouraging pieces of research.

The article, entitled Strengthen the Heart with Qigong states, "Several studies have proven Qigong’s effectiveness in treating those with high blood pressure and other heart problems. When practiced alongside conventional Western medical treatments, Qigong reduces high blood pressure and aids cardiac rehabilitation through improving balance, coordination, and physical activity." Additionally, researchers observed, "Even a single session of mental relaxation or [Qigong] can result in a temporary fall in blood pressure.” Click HERE to read the full article and the corresponding research citations.

Whether you show your heart some love through a few practice sessions of Qigong or you are as tenacious as the mighty Tiger and practice every day, take care of yourself. Remember, self-care is health care!

Be well,
Your friends at the Healer Within Foundation
