Chinese New Year
"Behave toward everyone as if receiving a guest." -Chinese Proverb
The Chinese New Year, also referred to as the Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, is a holiday that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional Chinese calendar. This year, it takes place on Friday, February 12. Celebrations and festivities begin the evening before the New Year up until the Lantern Festival, which is held on the 15th day of the new year.
This new year brings in the Year of the Ox in the Chinese zodiac. The element for the year is Metal. The Year of the Ox is also considered a Yin energy year which might be characterized as slow, soft, and passive. According to some Chinese Astrologers, this is a year which through hard work, many problems will be solved or resolved. Very encouraging!
The Yin energy, specific to the Chinese zodiac sign of Ox, will be quite poignant. This is going to be a year when we will fully feel the weight of our responsibilities, a year when it is necessary to double our efforts to accomplish anything at all. Whether of not you officially celebrate, you may take a cue from these Chinese traditions to hold your own personal observance:
- Enjoy an online/virtual reunion dinner with family and friends. In Chinese culture, the New Year's Eve feast is a "must do" dinner with all family members reuniting. A wonderful excuse to gather with loved ones if you haven't connected with them in awhile!
- Clean the house. This may not sound too celebratory, but Chinese people carry out a thorough ‘winter-cleaning’ of their houses during this time. They refer to this as, "sweeping away the dust," and it represents a wish to put away old things, bid farewell to the old year, and welcome in the New Year.
- Listen to (or ring your own) New Year bell. A bell is a traditional symbol of Chinese New Year, and Chinese people believe that ringing a large bell can drive away bad luck and bring good fortune.
No matter how you choose to celebrate, we hope this Year of the Ox brings you happiness, luck, prosperity and above all, good health.
Be well, Your friends at the Healer Within Foundation

5th Saturday Gathering: Three Treasures
HWF President, Josie Weaver, hosted a brilliant discussion and Qigong practice centered on the topic of, "Three Treasures: Practical Applications to Boost Immunity” which was presented by Qigong Master and co-founder of Healer Within Foundation, Dr. Roger Jahnke, OMD. Dr Jahnke was joined by longtime health professional and Institute of Integral Qigong and Tai Chi (IIQTC) Senior Trainer, Michael Fortier.
The Three Treasures are the core of all Qigong practice: Shen (spirit), Qi (heartmind), and Jing (body). Our panelists explored the perspective of building a strong spirit in order to circulate more Qi and build a strong body and a strong immune system. The shared practice focused on recognizing the signs of robust health, Qi flow, and a strong spirit. Deep bow of appreciation to Roger and Michael for a wonderful presentation!

Be Our Valentine: Giving Heart Campaign
Our HWF Sustainability/Practice Group Work Team has been busy coordinating a special fundraiser called the Giving Heart Campaign, which will run throughout the month of February.
The campaign was inspired by a recent personal fundraiser held by HWF Board Member Emeritus and IIQTC Senior Trainer, Antoinette Horn, in which she raised over $750 for HWF by simply reaching out to her students, family and friends!
To make things easy for everyone to participate, we've gathered up a few resources including a sample email format, information about HWF you may want to share and - very important - some great ideas on how to thank those who donate! There is even a quick video to help get you started.
Please go to www.healerwithinfoundation.org/GivingHeart for more information and thank you for your participation and support!
